Primera’s Bravo II Disc Publisher

5 Stars

Company: Primera Technology

Price: $2695 (DVD), $2195 (CD)

Pros: Automated process, once you get it all set up. Saves tons of time/money. High quality production, low cost (sort of), and you can do it all from your home.

Cons: Very expensive. Takes a lot of time/effort to get the printing set right. Software is slow (we used Toast instead).

When I first started taking orders for the recent Different District DVD (no longer available), I expected to take no more than 50 orders. However, after the press release went up all over the web, orders started pouring in. Immediately, I needed to seek alternate ways to get the job done.

At first, I started to look up DVD duplicators. Primera Technology was the one company that I saw popping up all over the place. Without Primera, the success of the DVD would have been impossible. The Bravo II is really a piece of work. Bravo II’s wonderful drivers and hardware, with the help of a Pioneer 16x DVD burner (CDs burn at 32x), can spit out full DVDs every 5 minutes! It uses advanced robotics technology to pick up a blank DVD, put it in the drive to record, then transport the disc to the printer tray where it prints directly onto the surface of inkjet printable media. No labels are used. Our test DVDs burned in under 7 minutes (tested with 8x media, estimated time of 4 minutes with 16x media).

This whole process is what makes the device. Primera’s Bravo II produces DVDs almost faster than I can package them! It is a perfect solution for any home or corporate office and is a real professional product.

Primera has also done a great job with the drivers. When you install the included drivers, it installs the duplicator as a Mac OS X printer. This allows you to print from any application! The duplicator then picks up each DVD and prints it just as a job was being run from Primera’s duplicating software, “Discribe Robot.” While writing this review, I learned that Primera now ships the Bravo II with both Mac and Windows software in every box. Bravo II can also optionally burn and print CD/DVD business cards and PTBurn Network Software is also available so multiple users can sends jobs to Bravo II remotely.

The machine is flawless. It burned through its fair share of DVDs and is still in perfect condition. With the combined success of your professional or personal DVD, the Bravo II will pay for itself before long. It served my needs well and I am sure it will do the same for you.

We have a Bravo 1 CD Duplicator. While the unit we have now seems very reliable, we had to send back 4 other units until we got one that worked well. I have since burned and printed over 6000 cd's with minor problems. One thing that is a problem is the Discribe software for OS X. This software is very buggy. It doesn't like it when you cancel a job midstream, forcing you to Force Quit the software from time to time. It also forgets the settings of a setup from time to time making the user to double check each settings every time. The other negative is the cost of the ink. With full coverage, the ink costs are about 32 cents per cd or more.

I did see a small amount of problems with the Dsicribe software, but only a small number of performance items. I think it could be improved to rival toast, but it works fine for my needs.

One question. I found Primera's customer service to be excellent in helping me with any problems...did they handle your returns well?

I have one the the Bravo II Disk Duplicators. I was able to burn and print a couple hundred CD's before the machine died (power problem). Three weeks later, Primara repaired the unit and shipped it back. Then, the CD burner died (zero CD's burned) immediately after I received the repaired unit. RMA time again. This is a piece of junk. Primera's support is very poor and their machines are not reliable. It seems like every time I need the machine, one part or another is dead and needs an RMA repair.

Hi Richard,

This is Amie Hoffner, PR Manager, at Primera Technology. I read your response and am concerned about your experience with Primera and its products. Primera prides itself in providing reliable products and exemplary customer service. We wouldn't be the world's leading manufacturer of CD and DVD duplication and printing systems without it. i have had problems with my Bravo II
the printer cd strays doesnt move at all.
I am trying to check the software but i have sent it 2 times for rma and nothing works.

I will try to installed in another computer to see what going on. If this doesnt work. I cannot believe this printer worked for less than 3000 cds and its so expensive $1 dollar a cd. I dont know it should print more

I was curious how long the ink ribbon lasts. Im very interested in this printer, but a big consideration is how many cds it can print before having to change the cartrige.

I own a Bravo II and at first I loved the machine. It went through about 300 DVD's with printing with out a hitch. But it seems now to only be a problem. The machines robotics are contstantly causing errors. It's usually a toss up weather I am able to get it to work again. The most frustrating thing about my problems is the lack of user support online. I have blinking lights on top of the machine. With my manual lost during my recent move, I have no way of knowing what is wrong with the machine. The primo software does not help the problem. I reset robitics and I still get the same problem. I have about had it with this machine.

my bravo is really starting to give me trouble. The arm usually doesn't rise high enough to clear the bins and when it does it won't pick discs up. I am very disappointed.

Hi there,

I am having the following problem. DVD-R videos that I burn when replayed stop and start and pixilate. I have tried a number of recomended disks - what else could the problem be? - burning at 1x - 4x on 8x speed disks.

Posted by: David, on March 19th at 7:46am

I have owned my Bravo II for nearly 2 years and it has been nothing but a pain. I have sent it back once as it only manages to print a few cd's before the print fades and looks totally rubbish. I have replaced the print cartridges many times and when it was sent away they cleaned the print heads and this stops the problem for maybe 20 prints, then its back to the same poor printing. I spend my days changing print settings and running cleaning jobs for every cd I do. This product really is not worth all the hassle that goes with it. I have never had a problem with is crashing windows or rejecting discs it is purely the printer that sucks for me. A real waste of money.

We bought the Bravo II disc publisher about a year or more ago. We have yet to get it to burn a single CD. We have mostly used it for printing labels. When the CD goes into the burner a green light appears as though the process is underway. Then after a few minutes the disc comes out blank. We have tried all kinds of CDs. We even ordered the Mac software and tried that, but still nothing is on the CD when it is ejected. We have talked to Tech support several times, yet nothing works. We've finally given up with this product and this company. This was an expensive little toy that sits mainly forgotten. We could really use it as we now burn our CDs one at a time. It's a real shame!

It doesn't look like Amie Hoffner will be returning here again as it could end up being an expensive exercise if she were to help everyone that has bought one of her companies duff products!
I thought about selling mine on Ebay but felt it was very unfair to inflict this product on someone else!
So like Charles, mine will sit, collect dust and take up space in my office, I cant even stand my coffee on it!

I just purchased a used bravo II for my company and it burns with no problem, however my printer tray will not open to allow the robot to place a disc inside. it appears to be a hardware issue as the front drive shaft doesn't spin yet i hear the motor run. any suggestions???

Posted by: Michael, on November 20th at 4:13am

can you refill the disc publisher 2 yourself ?or get you the message low on ink and can reset the ink level .

I was once very happy with the Bravo 2 robot. It is an important tool for maintaining ESU 19's video library. In October of '07', for no reason, it stopped communicating with Primera and Surething. It was shipped to Primera and they returned the robot with the response, "nothings wrong with it". Since then, I can burn using Discribe on Mac but have never regained the labeling capabilities of the robot. I have coaxed it as far as the robot going through the motions without labeling the disc . The solution? Purchase a new product. Anyone have a better solution?

I have had a Bravo 1 for years. We have sent it back twice. Once to the tune of $275 only to have it return and never burn more than 3 discs at a time. I was assured that the tech who worked on it was able to get a full run. We have never had a full run of 25 since owning the machine. It's a piece of junk with very expensive ink.
