About the Different District

After each learning basic HTML, John T. and Brad Mattison decided to create their own personal Mac sites, filled with links and major news. Soon after, in July of 2003, John and Brad decided to team up and create a community for Mac news, reviews and movies. Several dollars, empty Coke cans, and all-nighters later, the Different District was founded.

Since the first site was simply static code, it was soon time for a major update. In December of 2003, the team expanded to include Paul Alveraz, and Eugene Dong, both helping to reconstruct the website from the ground up. Together, the team assembled Version 2, which was run on the popular content management system called pMachine, allowing the site's content to be managed via a much easier to use interface.

Version 2 was a major revamp. Shortly after release on January 1st, 2004, the team expanded to include Matt Fuller, the head news writer. The DD team also redid the movies section and announced a place for users to upload songs created with Apple's newly released GarageBand music authoring software. These new features were a huge hit, and slowly the DD started to grow again.

Shortly thereafter, unfortunately, the site's servers were hacked. In early April an individual gained access to the site's control panel, and wiped out all of the DD's topics, users, and some of the more recent articles. Though it was a major loss, the website fully recovered several hours later, minus a week's worth of news stories and reviews.

As the year progressed, the staff membership was reorganized, and the team shrunk to Tylko and several part time writers. In September of 2004, Mike Livsey joined the team as Editor-in-Chief, bringing countless news stories and reviews under his belt.

Through the next year the site grew immensely. Over the summer of 2005, the team grew to include Tristan Mace, who helped to redesign every page on the site. In September, several more news writers joined, as well as Jamie Diamond, our head-podcast man. From a simple Mac fan site, to a small company, the Different District is now a major stop for Mac users from around the world.

Now, January 2009, the Different District is being rebuilt again. William Tylko has taken over the reins as Managing Editor. He began with trips to MacWorld in San Francisco and CES in Las Vegas, bringing home lots of products to review and stories to tell. He is also in the process of recruiting new staff, so if you're interested, drop us a line!
